Abstract:

Manufacturing is changing at breakneck speed. The paradigm shift, tagged Industry 4.0, is driven by the convergence of several emerging trends: huge increases in data volumes, in computational power, and connectivity; by advanced analytics; and by remarkable improvements in transferring digital instructions to the physical world.

If we do this right, Canada and Canadians have a unique opportunity to vault to the forefront, reasserting global competitiveness in advanced manufacturing.

As manufacturing leaps forward, industrial production machinery will no longer simply “process” a product, but rather, the product will communicate with the machinery … tell it exactly what to do. Industry 4.0 is all about breaking down barriers between man and machine … between products and machine … and between natural, traditional boundaries. It will transform the way we make, distribute and consume products.

About Detlef Zühlke:

Prof. Zühlke received his MS in electrical engineering and computer sciences and his PhD in robotics both from RWTH Aachen/Germany. Currently he is a Professor in Production Automation at the University of Kaiserslautern and Director of the research department Innovative Factory Systems (IFS) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). He is also executive chairman of the SmartFactoryKL, advisory board member of the VDI/VDE-Society for Measurement and Automatic Control and member of the advisory panel of Springer publishing. He held several management positions in the International Federation of Automatic Control IFAC. Furthermore, he is a member of the board of governors of the Manufacturing Leadership Council.

His research interest is in industrial control architectures, factory planning and operation and human- machine-systems for industrial applications.

He was honoured by the Doctor honoris causa of the Lucian Blaga Universtity Sibiu/Romania and the Badge of Honour of the German Society of Engineers VDI for outstanding contributions to the field of engineering.
