About Trueman Goba:

Born in Chesterville, Durban, South Africa, Trueman has been a prominent business man and engineer, and a very active member of his community.

Trueman first obtained a Survey Technician’s diploma at Mmadikoti College prior to completing his Bachelor of Science – Engineering Degree at the University of Natal, Durban in 1979. After a few years working as an engineer, he then travelled to North America to complete his Masters in Civil Engineering at Cornell University in 1986. He also holds a Public Policy and Development Administration diploma from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

A registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa, Trueman has been an active member of the industry for more than 30 years. In his early career, Trueman worked at Keeve Steyn and Partners, the Rural Advice Centre in South Africa, as well as for Whitman Requardt and Associates of Baltimore, Maryland in the United States.

He established a consulting engineering practice with Ebenezer Moahloli which grew partly through mergers into a well-established multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm.  In 2001, Trueman’s company Goba Moahloli and Associates merged with Keeve Steyn to form GOBA (Pty) Ltd, for which Trueman was Executive Chairman. In 2013, GOBA (Pty) Limited merged with Canadian born company Hatch, and Trueman is now Chairman of Hatch Africa (Pty) Ltd in South Africa.

He was appointed as a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa in 2001, and serves as President from 2007 to 2009. He was elected President of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers in 2002, which he considers to be one of his biggest professional achievements, and has served as chairman of the Cement and Concrete Institute. From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Goba was a member of the Construction Industry Development Board.

Trueman currently serves on the University KwaZulu-Natal Foundation Board as an active member, committed to the wellbeing of the University where he received his engineering degree.

Trueman served on South Africa’s National Planning Commission since its inception in 2010.
